Ways to lay out your colors
There are no rules for how to lay out your dye on top of the ice. You can add it in patches or stripes. You can lay colors side by side or layer them... the possibilities are endless! There is no right way to do it and everything you do will affect the outcome differently, which won't be revealed until your fabric is washed out!
It's good to know how many colors you want to use for each container, because you'll need to consider how big each patch or stripe is so you don't run out of room! You only have the surface of the ice, and once your container is full, even if you haven't gotten to a color you wanted to use, your only option will be to layer it on top of another color. You can absolutely do that, but layering colors on top of each other is a different technique than doing patches of colors next to each other. Try both!
Here is an example of laying out your colors on top of the ice in "patches."
Here's an example of applying dye in patches and the results:
You can also apply the dye powder in stripes:

This dress is as simple as putting deep purple on one side of the container, and raven black at the other. The dress was crumpled into the container so that the top was at one end and the bottom was at the other.
