What if I hate it?? Dyeing over a tie-dye

Sometimes projects just don't... spark... joy. That's ok! Unlike with pottery, where once it's fired, there's no changing the final product, with textile dyeing you can always dye the same piece again.

Here's a sad diamond. It isn't very interesting. We should have used more colors in the diamond part instead of a plain, solid red. The indigo around the border is good, and the purple almost-solid looks fine, but that center is just kind of lame.

Here's the steps to renewal:

  1. Refold the shirt so the center can be re-diamonded. (not a word, but you know.) Dip just the areas you want to re-dye in your soda ash soak, and gently squeeze out.
  2. Put rubber bands on to create more diamonds inside of the red area.
  3. Dye over those center sections with any colors you like-- remember, they'll be themselves plus red. (Color wheel theory!)
  4. Cure for 24 hours and wash!

And ta-da! A much, much better outcome.
