Materials Checklist: a shopping guide
Must-have tools and supplies for Tie-Dyeing:
(These specific links aren't necessarily the most affordable option for each item; later sections go into more choices for sourcing. Reliability & quality are also taken into consideration.)
- Fiber Reactive Dyes
- Things to dye! Clothing or fabric made from cellulose fibers only
- Squeeze bottles (16 oz. or 4 oz.)
- Tablespoon and teaspoon measurers
- Funnels that fit into your bottles easily
- Rubber bands (and sinew if you want it)
- Soda Ash (sodium carbonate) powder
- Gloves (I prefer vinyl and powder-free)
- Plastic grocery bags, gallon zip-lock bags, or lidded containers for keeping your dyed items damp while they cure
- Reusable washable rags, i.e., cut up an old towel
- Urea (optional)
- Dye thickener (optional) (ex: Superclear, sodium alginate)
- Foam paintbrushes (optional)
- Dawn Dish Soap (blue, original, or a professional textile detergent if you want to be fancy)
- A non-staining surface to work on. We love plastic folding tables because dye wipes off easily. You can cover any surface with plastic sheeting or just use an unopened garbage bag!
