What can I use as resists?
When I first began learning about Shibori in my twenties, I used old CDs exclusively for my resists. I made many, many shirts, shawls, and skirts with "moons" on them, because that's all I was able to think of using!
Now, however, with the internet being full of ideas and artists sharing with each other, I've compiled a better list of things folks have used to tie, bind, or clamp onto their shibori projects.
Add to the comments as you discover things around the house that you've used. As usual, we'll keep this list updated when we find something new and wonderful to try.
List of items to try clamping on fabric:
- popsicle sticks
- clothes pins
- binder clips & paper clips
- matching sets of jar lids
- old CDs
- acrylic shapes that are created just for this purpose! Here's another nice source, and these
- Wooden shapes (which do absorb dye, but I don't mind-- here's a budget option)
Clamps to buy:
Nylon spring clamps like these work well and don't rust.
We use standard-issue hardware store clamps.
Some people use C-clamps!
